Why Is Going Through a Divorce So Complicated?

We aim to help make your divorce as uncomplicated as possible. We can’t control your spouse or other external influences but can provide assistance, guidance, and advice when needed.

Getting married is relatively easy – you get a marriage license, set a date, and walk down the aisle. Wedding preparations take some planning, but you don’t need a lawyer or specific education.

However, when the marriage does not last, you soon realize that getting divorced is much more complicated. A divorce can take months or even more than a year to resolve, depending on your situation.

At The Betz Law Firm, we aim to help make your divorce as uncomplicated as possible. We can’t control your spouse or other external influences but can provide assistance, guidance, and advice when needed. We are committed to guiding our clients through the court process with the same level of professionalism that we would wish for our family members.

Why Divorce Is Complicated

Marriage is an intertwining of children, assets, memories, and more. Unraveling these complicated factors to end the marriage is not simple. Very few individuals can sign the papers and walk away. While every couple and situation is different, there are some common reasons why divorce tends to be complicated. When a cloud of emotions surrounds these reasons, the problems are compounded.

  • Children – This is one of the biggest, if not the biggest, reason divorce is complicated. Agreeing on custody, a parenting plan, child support, and the other associated factors are often fraught with challenges. The situation is even more problematic when one parent thinks the other is an unfit caretaker or abuse of some sort is involved. Making sure that what is best for the children should be the priority, but many couples allow their emotions to govern their decisions.
  • Assets – Owning a home, business, or other assets can be a significant issue. Deciding who gets the house and how funds will be paid to the one relocating can be complicated. Joint assets such as retirement and investment accounts complicate things further.
  • Spousal support – When one partner must help support the other after a split, emotions often run high. Those who have to pay spousal support may not feel that paying for their ex is fair. However, the individual seeking financial help may feel they’re owed payment because of the money earned in the relationship when married. The issue of spousal support could take months or years to determine ultimately.
  • Emotions – Divorce isn’t always an amicable, “we’ve come to the end-of-the-road” decision. One spouse may be ready to move on, while the other wants to hold on. Anger, resentment, and hurt can cause an individual to drag out the divorce. They may be uncooperative and intentionally ignore issues that must be resolved. This ultimately makes their divorce complicated.
